China-Laos railway speeds up freight transport – Xinhua

KUNMING, March 12 (Xinhua) — China-Laos Railway’s freight volume reached 1.2 million tons as the landmark high-quality cooperation project “Belt and Road” marked its 100th anniversary on Saturday. operating days.

Opened to traffic on December 3, 2021, the China-Laos railway stretches over 1,000 km and connects Kunming, capital of southwest China’s Yunnan Province, to the Laotian capital Vientiane.

According to the China Railway Kunming Group Co., Ltd., 13 provinces and municipalities, including Beijing, Shanghai and Sichuan, have opened cross-border freight train service on the railway.

After 100 days of operation, the goods imported via the China-Laos Railway exceeded 120,000 tons worth more than 500 million yuan (78.98 million US dollars), while exports reached 70,000 tons worth more than 1.7 billion yuan.

The product portfolio in freight trains has expanded from early-stage rubber and fertilizers to electronics, communications equipment, automobiles and flowers.

To further facilitate logistics transportation, operators launched the Lancang-Mekong Express service, which takes 26 hours from Kunming to Vientiane, shorter than general cargo transportation.

Meanwhile, passenger service on the railroad maintained a steady increase. It has so far carried more than 1.8 million passengers since its launch, with an average of 23.5 pairs of passenger trains daily along the China side route.
