International moving company 1st Move International sees surge in overseas immigration applications after New Zealand borders reopen

– 1st Move International is one of the largest privately owned international removal companies in the UK.

– As of July 31 this year, New Zealand has fully reopened its borders to visitors after having pandemic travel restrictions in place.

– The removals company is now seeing a surge in requests for international moves from the UK to New Zealand – around double on last year this time.

For approximately a quarter of a century, 1st Move International has been shipping household goods and personal effects around the world. The company is one of the largest privately-owned international removals companies in the UK, with extensive access to a global network of removals resources. 1st Move reported that requests for international moves from the UK to New Zealand are starting to increase again in volume, following a reduction in these during the pandemic due to strict travel restrictions.

Pandemic travel restrictions and emigration requests

New Zealand has always been a key market for 1st Move, serving as a popular destination choice for British expats, alongside the US, Australia and Dubai. However, after all of these countries closed their borders for travel during the pandemic, this market quickly shrank, leading to many concerns about the removals industry.

When travel restrictions were in place, New Zealand specifically had some of the strictest policies when it came to accepting visitors. Although it was still possible to ship to New Zealand during these restrictions, only returning New Zealand citizens were allowed to do so. Naturally, this limited the number of requests received by 1st Move during this period. Fortunately, earlier this year the country introduced a strategy to reopen its borders in phases.

The managing director of 1st Move International Limited, Mike Harvey, has seen the effect this has had on emigration from the UK. He said: “With countries restricting the movement of non-nationals across their borders and the lack of visa applications being processed, we obviously saw a drop in the number of applications, it was a worrying time for the ‘industry.”

The grand reopening of the border

As of July 31 this year, all visa categories are once again open to applications from travelers around the world and New Zealand has fully reopened its borders to travellers. 1st Move International reports that after announcing the reopening of visa applications and borders, they saw almost double the number of emigration applications compared to the same period in 2021.

Mr Harvey further comments: “We have continued to ship to New Zealand throughout the pandemic and are well positioned to continue to service this major route for those leaving the UK as visa applications are processed.

“Our unique approach to shipping personal effects has allowed us to offer our customers fixed shipping schedules and on-time departures, even during the pandemic.”
