The Superintendent of Operations will plan and oversee the daily operations of the terminal.
He or she will have the authority to set goals and guidelines, establish budgets and schedules, delegate tasks to staff and develop strategies to optimize operations and meet the expected needs of the terminal.

As Superintendent of Operations, you will assist in the development of staff to ensure they are operating at effective and efficient levels by monitoring performance and taking appropriate action to ensure they are reaching their full potential.

Main responsibilities

Manage to ensure that the deployment of personnel and equipment is well balanced in the passage between land and waterfront by highlighting established priorities and structured tasks and objectives.
Provide effective organization, control and management of all shore and shore terminal operations during designated shift periods to achieve planned objectives.
Coordinate terminal planning and operations to ensure effective vessel work schedules are established and maintained to ensure vessels meet sailing or berthing deadlines.
Liaise with Engineering Department Equipment Coordinators/Shift Management to maximize uptime and efficient use of equipment.
Demonstrate accountability through the respective Dock/Yard Superintendents to ensure efficient allocation of all shift operational staff and also ensure that equipment resources are balanced with consideration for the cost effective utilization of resources in equipment to meet the operational requirements of the terminal.
Ensure recognized safe working practices are employed for all terminal operations and maintain effective implementation of security policies and procedures.
Provide the first line of response for any accident/incident investigation, emergencies and damage assessments.
Ensure terminal attendance by maintaining significant visibility controls on all docking and yard activities continuously throughout a shift and prepare operational reports as required by management.
Maintain continuous operations by ensuring that all shift operational personnel use the “hot seat” shift at shift shift times and for operator rest break shifts in accordance with continuous work procedure .
Ensure that shift changes for land and waterside are completed with minimal loss of time under the hot seat arrangement.
Constant monitoring of work queues for land and waterfront as scheduled by the SCHEDULING unit, to ensure they are completed in a timely manner to facilitate smooth workflow for the shift work and the shift to follow.
Ensure that proper preparations are made for the next shift to facilitate the incoming shift to start the shift without loss of time.
General monitoring of gate activities and assistance as needed to achieve the best truck turnaround times.
Assist the Safety and Security team as needed to maintain the best control of the terminal.
Liaise with ship agents for efficient and timely clearance of ships to begin operations as soon as possible.
Assist in the development of staff to ensure they are operating at effective and efficient levels by monitoring performance and taking appropriate action to ensure they are reaching their full potential.
Contribute to the “on the job” training of supervisory staff and undertake other duties within the capabilities required by senior management.


8+ years of terminal operations experience, preferably in logistics or shipping.
A proven history of successful leadership
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
Must be a strategic thinker and have strong negotiation skills
Have a collaborative spirit and work well in a team
Superior time management skills and able to meet deadlines
Excellent organizational skills
