John Curtis Jr. Justin Horne wins four times in Area 3-5A track meet; see list of status qualifiers | Preparation sports

Justin Horne went down the home stretch with a runner on either side of him, and it wasn’t until junior John Curtis ducked past the other two runners at the finish that the Patriots won the 4×200 meter relay.

For Horne, that was just the beginning. The junior swept both hurdles events and ran on the winning 4×400 relay, making him a four-event winner at the 3-5A Region Athletics Championships on Wednesday at Thibodaux High School.

Brother Martin won the boys’ tag team championship and Mount Carmel won the girls’, but it was Horne who stood among the most decorated competitors at this state qualifying competition.

“Last year, we only had two people qualified for the state,” Horne said. “None of us did any good. It’s great to grow the program and qualify people for statehood this year.

Horne said he “had to find a different speed” to finish ahead of a St. Augustine rider at the end of the 4×200. Horne’s lean in the final allowed John Curtis to win by less than a hundredth of a second. The results displayed show both teams with a final time of 1 minute, 27.46 seconds. Destrehan was a close third – 0.16 seconds behind the other two.

He had a similar result in the 4×400 when he came out of the final turn and passed the St. Augustine and Brother Martin riders. He finished 0.18 seconds ahead of the second-placed relay team.

“He’s a competitor, and he’ll find a way, that’s what we preach every day,” Curtis coach Preston Curtis said. “He embodies what we preach every day. He competes no matter what and always finds a way.

For team champion Brother Martin, elder Grant Buquoi won the shot put after placing fifth in that event at the state last year. The Crusaders have qualified nine individuals and two relays for the state meet scheduled for May 7 in Baton Rouge.

The individual winners for Mount Carmel were Catalina Reichard in the 1600m, Natalie Doiron in the pole vault and Sophie Junius in the javelin. Mount Carmel coach Rob Farrell said the Cubs will have 15 competitors in the state.

“Everyone worked so hard,” Reichard said. “Even though people say athletics is an individual sport, I feel like we really come together. Part of how we win is everyone cheers so hard and everyone wants it so badly. .

Holy Cross won the 4×100 relay ahead of Curtis with second Krosse Johnson on the anchor. Johnson won the 200 and was runner-up behind John Ehret’s Armani Cargo in the 100.

The Jesuit finished 1-2 at the 1600 with returning state champion Michael Vocke, a sophomore, followed by freshman Leland Crawford. The Blue Jays had another 1-2 in the 3,200m with returning state champion Jack Desroaches finishing ahead of Lucas Sampedro.

St. Augustine’s Zander Dunbar won the 800m but didn’t have to race against Vocke after Vocke edged Dunbar by 0.15 seconds in the District 9-5A meet last week. The Jesuit decided that Vocke would put his full attention on the 1,600 at the state, keeping him out of the 800 for the regional meet.

Recent LSU track and field engagement Jack Larriviere won the javelin.

In the girls’ 1600m, MCA’s Reichard edged Morgan Trauth of the Dominican a week after Trauth edged Reichard in the 9-5A meet in New Orleans. In the 3200m, Trauth and her Dominican teammate Elise Raque raced side by side to finish 1-2.

Marley Richard of Destrehan qualified for four events winning the 100m, placing second in the 200m and triple jump, and third in the long jump.

Higgins’ Laila Jackson won the 800m and will seek a second state championship in the event after winning last year while a student at John Curtis.
