Ferry crossings between Nanaimo and Gabriola Island have been canceled for later in the day, June 25, BC Ferries says.
Citing crew availability on the vessel from Kwigwis Island, a service notice stated that although a 4:35 p.m. departure from Descanso Bay on Gabriola Island and a 5:05 p.m. Nanaimo port will depart as usual, all departures for the rest of the day will not proceed.
Total departures at 5:40 PM, 6:50 PM, 8 PM, 9:40 PM and 10:30 PM from the Descanso Bay terminal and departures at 6:15 PM, 7:30 PM, 9:10 PM, 10:05 PM and 11 PM from the port of Nanaimo are all cancelled.
“A 50-person water taxi has been found and will provide free service on the regularly posted schedule from the 5:40 p.m. departure from Gabriola Island,” BC Ferries said.
Although there are two ferries serving the route, Gwawis Island being the other, BC Ferries said Kwigwis Island is the only one that runs in the evening.
A specific number of crews are needed on the ships to keep passengers safe and meet Transport Canada regulations, BC Ferries said in a notice, and the decision was made because it had “exhausted all options to find a replacement crew. That said, if circumstances change and a replacement crew becomes available, [it] would notify customers immediately.
