The 2021 Safety and Environment Prize winners

OTTAWA, ON, December 2, 2021 / CNW / -The Association of Railways Canada (RAC) announced the winners of its 2021 Safety and Environment Awards, which recognize RAC members for their outstanding contributions to rail safety and environmental impact.

Over the years, our members continue to work hard to reduce their environmental footprint and improve rail safety measures. These awards reflect the continued commitment of our members as well as the four pillars of our RightTrack initiative, ”said Marc Brazeau, President and CEO, Railway Association of Canada.

At March 5, 2021, the RAC launched on 16e edition of the Safety and Environment Trophies competition. Annual nominations are limited to one RAC member railway initiative per category (or subcategory).

The RAC Safety Awards are given annually while the Environmental Awards are given every two years. The two groups of winners are chosen from member submissions and ratified by the Safety and Operations Management Committee (SOMC).

The winners of the Rail Safety Awards for 2021 are:

North American Cargo Class 1 Safety Award – Employee Incidents and Third Party Incidents: Canadian National Railway (CN)

Canadian National Railways (CN) submitted a nomination for the Safety Award for their Autonomous Track Inspection Program (ATIP) which is used to employ a variety of inspection systems and methodologies, each aimed at providing a high degree of autonomous inspection capability. The program consists of eight box cars, each equipped with its own solar power supply and generator, as well as electronic communication systems and servers capable of accommodating various inspection technologies in commercial train service. As a technology platform, ATIP employs a variety of inspection systems and methodologies, each aimed at providing a high degree of autonomous inspection capability. The first such system introduced by CN was an Autonomous Track Geometry Measurement System (ATGMS) used to perform heavy geometry inspections.

Safety Award in the Passenger category (interurban, tourist, commuter): VIA Rail Canada

VIA Rail Canada nominated for the Safety Award for its New coupler tool which is a safer, more efficient and ergonomic method of removing and installing the coupling assembly on the various types of cars and locomotives in service. This new and innovative design is a complete change from the previous tool. It eliminates the need for counterweight and provides a stable moving platform that can be transported to the track where the car or locomotive is. The simple design with vertical and side adjustments for precise placements during removal / installation is the elimination of pinch points, crush injuries and stress for employees.

In true teamwork, our mechanical services identified a risk and formed a cross-functional team with employees from various departments to collectively create an innovative solution that made the process of removing and installing the hitch assembly safer and more efficient, ”said Dominique Lemay, Chief Operating Officer at VIA Rail Canada. “We applaud the team’s accomplishments and look forward to more great initiatives like this in the years to come.”

The winners of the 2021 Environmental Rail Prize are:

Environmental Award in the Class 1 Freight Category in North America: Canadian Pacific Railway (CP)

Canadian Pacific (CP) nominated for the Environment Award for its Solar power farm which is a solar power generation system on the campus of the company’s head office in Calgary, A B. The project is one of that of Alberta larger private solar farms and is expected to produce more electricity than is consumed annually by the main building of CP’s head office. This project demonstrates CP’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions while innovatively reallocating existing land assets to integrate renewable solar energy into facility operations. It consists of four expansive solar gardens covering around 10 hectares of underutilized campus land and creating a covered parking lot that can accommodate up to 500 employee vehicles. The project includes more than 9,700 solar panels capable of generating up to 5 megawatts of renewable electricity, significantly reducing CP’s demand for electricity from local utility providers.

Environment Award in the Passengers category (interurban, tourist, commuter): VIA Rail Canada

VIA Rail Canada nominated for the Environment Award for the LEED Gold certification of his Ottawa station. The Ottawa Heritage Station was identified as the flagship station where new sustainability and accessibility initiatives would be tested. Since 2016, many improvements and renovations have been carried out in these areas.
